It is importent that caregivers be aware of labeling a person with special needs. Like so many things in life it’s both helpful and dangerous.
A label can help give you the support you need.
A label can help others better understand your unique challenges.
A label can provide funds to help reduce your struggles.
A label can also lower expectations, both from others and your self.
A label also brings with it social stigma.
A label can lead to a victim mindset.
As a caregiver, the words and labels you use will have an impact. The key is striking that balance between using the label to get the support your loved one needs, while also not limiting their abilities and world view. This is a very hard challenge and unfortunately there is no manual on the right way.
